Sleep apnea threatening stroke in men

Medical study found that sleep apnea increases the risk of stroke in men middle-aged and older, according to a statement received by Al Jazeera Net U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Researchers have found the project "Heart Health Study sleep" obstructive apnea during sleep doubles the risk of stroke in men more than twice. The outcome of the study was published electronically on patrol "Journal of Medicine breathing and intensive care."
It is known that obstructive apnea during sleep is a common disorder, as linseed or narrows the upper respiratory track intermittently, which disrupts sleep and breathing during sleep.
The researchers said that men who have mild breathing stops during sleep are at risk of stroke, and increase the risks increase the severity of the condition.
They noted that the risk of stroke associated with interruption of breathing during sleep is independent of other risks associated with weight and high blood pressure, race, smoking, and diabetes.
Other risks
The researchers discovered for the first time a link sleep apnea with an increased risk of strokes in women as well.
The stroke the second leading cause of death worldwide. Although scientists discovered several factors that increase risk, such as age, high blood pressure and shivering fibrillation (heart) and diabetes, there are many cases of stroke of unknown cause.
The researchers studied the risk of stroke in 5422 participants and the participation of over forty previously had not been inflicted by strokes. The participants underwent tests initially record sleep in their homes to identify cases of sleep apnea, including, and the severity of cases, if any.
The researchers followed the participants for an average of nine years periods, and stated that 193 participants suffered stroke: 85 out of 2462 men, and 108 out of 2960 women. And calculates the impact of other factors related to cardiovascular risk and found that the contribution of sleep apnea in the risk of stroke is higher among men than women.
Additional aging
It has been observed in men has been a steady increase stroke risk with high levels of sleep apnea from mild to moderate to severe. But for women came significant increased risk of stroke with severe levels of sleep apnea.
The researchers attribute the differences between men and women that men are more vulnerable to injury in this case early, and thus they are exposed for longer periods.
Susan believes Rdlaan the main author of the study and professor of medicine and epidemiology and biostatistics at Case Western in Cleveland that he was probably the risk of stroke related to the cumulative impact of the situation, which negatively affects health over many years.
The overall results of the study to increase the risk of stroke in men infected stop breathing during sleep rewards add ten years to the real age.
